“Hush your mouth” is often defined as simply “Hush”.

But it's so much more! It can be a response to a compliment - ”You look so elegant in that formal dress, everyone will be envious!” - “Hush your mouth!”

Or a way to avert bad luck - “Everything I try lately turns out good - I just won $100 on a scratch-off ticket” - “Hush your mouth!”

Or even an implied reprimand - “But Mom, everyone else is going” - “Hush your mouth!”

I can't count the number of times my own grandmother said those words to me under her breath. How many times have you heard or said this wonderful Southern Saying?
